INFORMATION ABOUT AUDITIONING

When will the next auditions be?

Soon we will open the auditions for all those who want to join the Barcelona Gay Men's Chorus. Auditions usually take place over several days to be able to accommodate all those who apply.

Where are auditions held?

The auditions are always held at our usual rehearsal space, which is located in the neighborhood of
Sant Antoni of Barcelona. As soon as you request an audition, we will tell you where and how to get there.

How do I sign up for auditions?

Once the auditions are open we will enable different channels to sign up.
But normally you have to send an email stating that you want to attend an audition.

The audition coordinator will tell you the day and time you must attend.

What will my audition consist of?

The audition consists of two tests:

1) A vocalization test (pitch and range) to determine if you are a bass, baritone or tenor.

2) A performance of a piece to be freely chosen.

You can sing it a cappella, or bring an accompaniment recorded on mp3 or with a piano score.

What happens once the audition is done? Is there a waiting list to enter the BGMC?

If you pass the audition you will be able to quickly join rehearsals. Normally in one or two weeks or after a holiday period if the audition happens to take place in summer or Christmas.

There is currently a waiting list to join the BGMC, but we will notify you as soon as places are available.

WHAT WE DO AT THE BGMC

Where are the rehearsals and for how long?

The Barcelona Gay Men's Chorus rehearses every Wednesday in a venue located in the Sant Antoni neighborhood of Barcelona. Rehearsals usually last a couple of hours, or sometimes three, depending on whether a show is being prepared or not. The time slot is between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

Extraordinary rehearsals are also often called on weekends or before 8:00 p.m. for soloists, for a single string (basses, baritones or tenors) or to rehearse choreography.

Rehearsals begin in September and end at the end of July. The official holidays during which there are no rehearsals are the Christmas holidays and the month of August.

How often does the BGMC perform?

The BGMC schedules at least one or two annual concerts organized by the choir itself, which are usually in the month of June or July, and in December. Additionally, whenever the director's schedule and the choir's rehearsal schedule allow, there are usually more concerts at other times of the year.

If you wish, you can see the performances carried out this year and previous years in the Performances section.

Is it possible to be part of the choir but not perform at concerts?

Of course. No member is required to act publicly.

You can go to rehearsals, learn the songs, improve your vocal technique and even practice the choreography of some of the songs without having to go on stage when there are performances.

How many people make up the BGMC?

The BGMC is made up of Gerard (the musical director), Conxita (our sign language interpreter) and approximately 60 amateur and professional singers.

The singers are divided into three strings: basses, baritones and tenors.

What language are the songs in?

The repertoire is quite varied and includes songs sung in Spanish, Catalan and English.
Additionally, some of them incorporate some words from sign language.
Occasionally we sing in other languages such as Italian or French.

Is it necessary to know sign language to be part of the BGMC?

No. Conxita, our sign interpreter is in charge of interpreting all the songs in sign language (LSC), singing with her hands. The rest of the singers can incorporate signs in some songs, but in no case is it necessary to have prior knowledge.

How much does it cost to be a BGMC member?

BGMC is a non-profit association that is self-financing through a monthly fee per member.
The fee for this year is €25 per month.

I don't know how to read sheet music. Is it a problem?

It's okay if you don't know how to read sheet music.

At the BGMC there are singers who know how to read it and others who don't. With rehearsals, songs are learned little by little, but the director always indicates and guides all the singers so that they can sing without having to directly read the notes of the score.
